If you grew up with an Amiga, you probably still remember the boot screen, the floppy disk grind and the feeling that this computer was years ahead of everything else. The THEA1200 is a full-size remake of the Amiga 1200, and it’s finally almost here.
Here’s everything we know: the release date, price, what’s in the box and whether it’s worth pre-ordering.
THEA1200 Release Date
The THEA1200 is set to launch on December 4, 2026. It was originally due June 16, 2026, but Retro Games Ltd pushed it back about six months. The company said the operating system wasn’t where it needed to be, and pointed to global chip shortages and rising plastic production costs.
It’s not the first delay, either. The machine was originally planned for the end of 2024, but was shelved over legal disputes about the Amiga branding. Those issues are now settled.
THEA1200 Price
The THEA1200 costs $189.99 in the US (£149.99 in the UK). You can pre-order the THEA1200 on Amazon.
What You Get
Unlike the mini consoles, this is the full-size machine with a real, working keyboard. In the box you get the computer itself, a classic-style mouse and a game controller.
Here’s what it does:
It comes with 25 built-in games, each with four save slots. It can load additional games from a USB stick, so you can play games you own. It has an integrated Workbench desktop, the classic Amiga operating environment, and multi-region HDMI video for modern TVs.
Which Games Are Included?
Retro Games Ltd has confirmed titles including Beneath a Steel Sky, Lure of the Temptress, Ruff ‘n’ Tumble, Defender of the Crown I and II, and the Turrican trilogy. It’s a strong lineup of Amiga classics, with a nice mix of adventure games and action.
Is It Emulation?
Yes. Like the company’s earlier THEC64 and THEA500 Mini, the THEA1200 runs on emulation rather than original or FPGA hardware. For most people that’s fine. Purists who want cycle-accurate hardware might prefer FPGA-based options, which usually cost more.
Should You Pre-Order?
If you owned an Amiga, or always wanted one, I think it’s worth it. A full-size keyboard makes a huge difference for Workbench and keyboard-heavy games, and the price is reasonable for what you get. Just know that it’s emulation, and that it won’t arrive until December 4, so it’ll be tight if you want it as a Christmas gift.
